When Margie Fagan first visited Grand Haven three decades ago for a family reunion, she fell in love.

“We rented five or six homes, we were here for a week and I absolutely fell in love with it – the feel of the town, the charm, the quaintness, the water,” Fagan said. “It just felt like home.”

And now it is.

Fagan moved here in late January from Kansas. And with her came her interior design business, Margie Fagan Interiors, which she operates out of her Grand Haven home.

Fagan can give your home a new look with your current furnishings or completely redesign your abode.

“I love picking out paint colors and giving them a whole new look,” Fagan said. “My favorite thing is accessories. That kind of is the pearls-to-the-black-dress to me. It puts the final touch on and pulls the whole look together.”

Fagan has received some national accolades for the way she makes thing look.

New York-based Schumacher & Co. tabbed her as “Nationwide Designer of the Year” in 1991. She is a featured designer in Better Homes and Gardens/Bedrooms and Baths and has appeared on the cover of Country Accents.

“My specialties lie in all aspects of the interiors of one’s home, from a simple design consult, floor plans, remodel, furniture, flooring, window treatments, staging and accessorizing,” Fagan said. “No project is too big or too small. My focus now is to establish my business here in Western Michigan.”

Fagan said a common problem with interiors is too much stuff against the perimeters of a room.

“You go into houses and people are stumped,” Fagan said. “They’ve jammed all their stuff up against the walls. Let it float a little bit. There are some people that really do have very good tastes and know what they’re doing. There are people that have absolutely no idea or any desire to do what I do, but they appreciate the finished good look. Those are my favorite people because they are the most surprised. They are out for a good look, but have no idea how to do it.”
