The retail growth is changing the landscape of the former Lappo Lumber site at 6425 Airline Road.

Tractor Supply Co. opened March 1 as the retailer's 74th Michigan store.

“Fruitport is a great location for Tractor Supply Co. because the area is full of 4-H groups, urban farmers and traditional farmers,” said store manager Ben Gillette.

The 20,800-square-foot store features everything from seeds and gardening supplies to fencing and livestock supplies.

Gillette said livestock feed, wood pellets and hardware parts have been big sellers so far.

“Our sales have been higher than we anticipated and traffic was higher,” he said. “People are glad we're close. It's saving them time from having to travel. They're raving about the staff. It's been a great time and it's a lot of fun. Every day we come in, people are smiling.”

Developer Don Kettler said besides TSC and Dollar General at the southwest corner of Airline and Farr roads, he expects several other companies to eventually build on out lots on the 12 acres by the Tennessee-based farm store company.

The development was the main catalyst behind the $1.6 million sanitary sewer project on Airline and Pontaluna roads, according to Fruitport Township Public Works Director Matt Farrar.

This is actually great news! Gotta love seeing new businesses come to the local area. Nice not having to run to N Muskegon for their store anymore! I am going to check both stores out today. Thanks for a real news story Marie! Btw, nice to see all the construction going on by the mall also.
