Reading for progress

A tall bookshelf stood before Emma Maierhauser and Olivia McKenna. The 10-year-old girls flipped through pages of the books as they carefully determined which ones to check out from Spring Lake District Library.

Maierhauser and McKenna are among more than 500 children signed for the library’s Fizz Boom Read summer reading club.

Throughout the summer, Spring Lake District Library and Loutit District Library are offering opportunities for children and adults to stay engaged by reading. So far, more than 400 children have signed up for the Loutit program.

Maierhauser and McKenna said they have previously participated in the summer program because of their mutual passion for reading.

“When you’re reading, you go to different places,” McKenna said.

While reading gives McKenna a chance to explore new places, Spring Lake District Library youth services librarian Elizabeth Griffin said it’s important children continue reading throughout their summer vacation from school to prevent “summer reading loss.”

“June through September is a long time, especially in a kid’s life,” she said.

Mary Jane Evink, curriculum specialist for Grand Haven Area Public Schools, said summer is a “double-edge sword” — when students can either advance their reading skills or slide behind. She said improving literacy helps children across all subjects.

“Reading is a gateway skill,” Evink said. “You need it to learn other subjects well.”

As Spring Lake readers tally the number of books they read and participants in the Grand Haven library program log the number of minutes they read, they all have the chance to win prizes throughout the summer.

Allison Boyer, head of youth services for Loutit District Library, said the program provides an incentive for children who need a little extra encouragement.
