“I’ve kind of been drumming it around in my mind for awhile,” said Koops, 60. “It wasn’t an easy decision, but I thought it was a good time to go.”

Koops has worked in education for 35 years — 17.5 of them as Jeffers’ principal. He was previously a principal and teacher in Allegan County.

In addition to his administrative work, Koops served as the varsity wrestling coach at Spring Lake High School for seven years, guiding the Lakers to several Lakes Eight Conference championships before stepping down following the 2009-10 season.

Following his retirement, Koops plans to travel to Florida to work on a house that he inherited a couple of years ago.
