The first-ever Applied Week kicked off with all 177 of the school’s staff wearing a “Have You Applied?” T-shirts and sharing why a post-secondary experience was important to them. In addition, TCAN college advisor Haley Lamm and Director Kim McLaughlin met with students who had not yet applied and facilitated the application process, including requesting their transcripts.

By Friday, 83 percent of the school’s seniors had applied to a post-secondary option, and they celebrated by wearing T-shirts that read “Applied.”

“More than ever, our students realize that committing to a post-secondary education institution or training experience is critical to their future success,” GHHS Principal Tracy Wilson said. “This week created a lot of fun and energy around the very important topic of the college application process and planning for the future.”

By 2018, it is projected 60 percent of jobs will require at least some form of post-secondary education, McLaughlin said.

“Earning your high school diploma isn’t enough anymore,” she said. “Students must receive some education beyond high school so that they have more opportunities and choices in the workforce today.”

The Grand Haven Area Community Foundation, along with both Grand Haven and Spring Lake school districts, supported the creation of TCAN. Its mission is to develop a sustainable network that creates a college-going culture in the community, and its goal is to increase the number of residents in the Tri-Cities area who have a college degree or high-quality credentials.

The program will not be held at Spring Lake High School this year, but McLaughlin said it will be held at both SLHS and GHHS in the fall, and again at GHHS in January 2013.
