In Spring Lake, the February count is 2,458.6 (the 0.6 means six-tenths of a student, or a student who is less than full-time, mainly at the high school).

This number is up from 2,447 counted in February 2011, but down slightly from the fall 2011 count of 2,461.

“Overall, we’re trending up a little bit,” Spring Lake Superintendent Dennis Furton said. “Typically, in our winter counts, we don’t see a lot of transient students.”

Grand Haven Area Public Schools counted 5,952 students on Wednesday, which is up 11 students from last year at this time. However, the numbers are down 33 from the fall 2011 count.

According to Furton, being down three from the fall count is not a major concern.

“By next fall, we hope to be back to our fall 2011 numbers, or even up from that,” he said.
