The annual program recognizes outstanding young writers in memory of Saunders, a 1989 Spring Lake High School graduate who served as the foundation's president at the time of his death in January 2010.

The foundation delivered two published books to each of the winners – one for the winning student author and the other for the student's school library.

Jordyn Barding won the elementary division with “Dogknapped,” which she wrote as a fourth-grader at Jeffers Elementary School.

Lilly Saunders, Jonas' daughter, took intermediate/middle school honors with “Letters to God”; and Alexander David Sinn, a 2011 graduate, won the high school division with “Stars Shine Only On the Living.”
