Jason Lawson, a fifth-grade teacher at Robinson Elementary School since 2009 and the high school's freshmen basketball coach for three years, will become Lake Hills’ new principal as it transitions into a K-4 school.

The current principal, Sue Mueller, is retiring after 22 years with the Grand Haven district — the last eight years as principal.

“I’m going to miss all of my students, the families and the staff the most,” said Mueller, 63.

Mueller said she plans to stay in the Grand Haven area and spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

The district’s interview team grilled eight candidates for the position in April and May. The Board of Education approved Lawson's promotion, which comes with a $77,000 annual salary.

“I’m very grateful for this opportunity,” Lawson said.

Mueller believes Lawson, 34, will do well as principal.
