Students from the West Michigan Academy of Arts and Academics raised more than $14,000 for school programs during a Friday walkathon, school administrator Travis Thomsen said.

A rally took place at the school before younger children headed on a one-mile route to William Ferry Park. Older children walked nearly two miles, turning around at Sunny Side Park.

Thomsen said volunteers manned water stations at both parks. Children were allowed some play time before they headed back to school.

The annual event will help fund next year’s field trips, middle school teacher Sandy Worth said.

“All of the money goes back into their education,” Thomsen said.
