Peach Plains Elementary School will dedicate an outdoor garden and classroom space for the young girl who died in February 2012. The ceremony will take place on Shelby’s birthday, June 19, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The space will serve as an area where teachers can take their students for outdoor instruction, science projects or to play.

Shelby’s mother, Kristen Hardebeck, said her family is honored and touched by the community’s support. Kristen said she couldn’t think of a better place for the outdoor classroom because Shelby loved Peach Plains Elementary School and its staff.

As parents met to discuss the new space, Kristen said they wanted the area to have color and reflect the type of person Shelby was — giving, loved to learn, loved children and more.

“We want it to be a fun area that everyone can take part in,” she said.

Kristen said the family — including Shelby’s father, Todd, and her four brothers — still takes it "day by day" in coping with the sudden loss of Shelby.
