Recycling computers?

Kathy of Spring Lake asked, "Where can people take their old laptops, computers and other electronic equipment to dispose of them safely? I understand there are quite a few toxic chemicals and materials in these items."

ANSWER:

Yes, Kathy, electronics often contain hazardous materials that should not be thrown into landfills or incinerated. They also may contain precious metals, glass and plastics that can and should be recycled.

If you can wait until spring, a Grand Haven church has been collecting old electronics for recycling.

First Christian Reformed, 516 S. Ferry St., turns them over to CompRenew Environmental of Grand Rapids. That has provided some cash for the church's ministry and youth group. Their next planned collection event is May 4.

If you need to get rid of it before that, try the Ottawa County Resource Recovery Center on the south side of Comstock Street, between 168th and 172nd avenues. The county Health Department-run centers in Grand Haven, Holland and Georgetown townships accept consumer electronics and televisions for recycling and safe disposal.

The Grand Haven-area center is open Mondays and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2-5 p.m., and 8 a.m. to noon every fourth Saturday of the month.

Computer equipment can also be recycled at Goodwill locations through a recycling partnership between Goodwill and Dell Computers.

Also consider calling MacMedia in Holland at 616-355-3301. They accept and refurbish used computers and provide them to low-income families.
