GH Bird Club mystery

Daniel of Grand Haven asked, "Do you have any information on the rectangular stone in Central Park with the words 'GH Bird Club 1917' chiseled on the front? Does it serve as a bird feeder, bird bath, or both?"

ANSWER:

Daniel said he's also curious about the club itself and when it was formed and disbanded. Unfortunately, it's all a mystery.

I couldn't find a mention of the club in Dr. Dave Seibold's local history book, "Grand Haven in the Path of Destiny." Nor did local historian Wally Ewing and Loutit District Library local history librarian Jeanette Weiden have any knowledge of the club or the bird bath/monument.

"Other people have come into the library in the past and we couldn't find anything," Weiden said.

The old rectangular stone in the east end of the park does appear to be a bird bath, as it has a sloping trough on top that collects water.

A member of the local Audubon Society chapter didn't know, but promised to ask other club members at their next meeting.

For now, it's a mystery. Maybe somebody out there knows. Comment below or send me an e-mail: mbrooky@grandhaventribune.com.
