The cost of a smile

Lee of Spring Lake Township asked, "How much more did it cost Fruitport to paint its water tower with an uplifting smiley face rather than the blasé blue or tan we see everywhere else? It makes me smile every time I drive past it."

In case you haven't seen it, Lee also sent along a photo of the smiling water tower.

Fruitport Township Supervisor Brian Werschem said the cost for painting letters, emblems, etc., on a water tower is done on a square-footage basis.

"The cost difference between putting the lettering 'Fruitport Township' vs. Mr. Smiley was very incidental," Werschem explained. "It has been a landmark staple of this community for decades and it cost us very little more in the scheme of the $125,000 repainting project. It was not bid separately and was not itemized, but we are sure the cost difference was minimal."

My 2.5 year old twins love to see "The Smiley Face Tower" when we are in Fruitport. And... as kids, my brother, sister and I always knew that we were home from "Up North" when we saw it. Such fun!
