Emergency crews douse wildfire on Dewey Hill

Firefighters had to put out an unexpected light show next to the Grand Haven Musical Fountain on Dewey Hill on Friday night. According to Sgt. Mike Ercole of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety, crews from Ferrysburg, Grand Haven and the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department Marine Patrol were dispatched at about 10 p.m. on a report of a 50-by-50-foot wildfire on the hill. Ercole said the likely cause of the fire was because of fireworks that were set off in the area, but they aren't sure who launched the fireworks.

“It presents a challenge when it works up the hill," he said. "But, other than that, it was simple (to contain)."

According to Ercole, crews spent about 45 minutes on the scene.

The fire was visible to those who were attending the Musical Fountain show on the waterfront.

Shelley DeYoung of Rockford said she could see the fire over the trees.

“There was quite a good flame going," she said. "It took them a while to get here though."

Amy Parente of Grandville said the marine patrol boats were a little distracting for people watching the Musical Fountain. Parente said she found the fire more interesting to watch.
