Police said Jose Moreno Jr., a senior at West Ottawa High School who was to graduate next week, died later Wednesday night after resuscitation efforts failed to revive him.

Emergency crews were called to the Holland State Park beach at 6:20 p.m. following the report of a person in the water. Witnesses said the boy, who was wearing jeans and a T-shirt, jumped off the north pier along with a female friend. Witnesses said the girl managed to get out of the water, but the boy did not.

Sgt. Cal Keuning of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department said dive teams used a sonar-equipped robot to find Moreno after nearly two hours of searching for him. That long search was followed by more than an hour and a half of CPR.

Moreno was taken to Holland Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:39 p.m. Wednesday.

So far this year, there have been 10 drownings in Lake Michigan. The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project says there were 24 drownings in Lake Michigan last year.

Such a sad and preventable tragedy. I can't imagine the family dealing with this. Sorry for your loss. But, this has to be addressed in some way. Is this the year we install the fences with barbed wire on the piers? READ THE SIGNS! Every year we lose kids this same way. This is nothing new. And still the lessons evidently are not learned. What am I missing here?

No this is the year they tattoo baby's butts at birth saying "life is dangerous for your health be aware of your own decisions and take personal responsibility for own actions."

Straightjacket...I hope a tragedy like this doesn't happen in your family and you have to read some idiot's response like this about it.

@skeptical - I didn't think your response was idiotic.

Sending my prayers. The Great Lakes are not a back yard pool. Whatever the outcome, I hope the boy and his family find peace after all of this.

You have no ideal what I have been through personally and have witnessed in my life. Death I have seen many times. I am just saying we don't need barb wire on piers and more signs people walk around. I have no idea why I am alive coming through what I have, maybe just good desicions and common sense?

skeptical

I agree straightjacket. We don't need barbs around the piers. I'm sorry for your losses. It was the tone of the comment that rubbed me the wrong way.
My condolences to the family.

I lost two freinds in high school crossing the white lake channel (not at the same time) and most of the time you could see the bottom when the sun is right. There are currents down there a young swimmer is not prepared for.

Make sure you hug your kids every day.
