A K-9 unit from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department participated in the search in the Driftwood Inn/Starlite Lanes lot off Beacon Boulevard.
Sgt. Nate Grant, who heads the team for the Sixth District out of Rockford, said troopers made the traffic stop, partly because the truck was from Texas.
“Vehicles traveling to Michigan from the southwest border states sometimes raise suspicions,” he said.
The search was conducted with the driver’s consent, Grant said.
The sergeant said his five-member criminal interdiction team works an area from Holland to Ludington and Mount Pleasant to Ionia. It’s not just commercial vehicles they stop — they also check out passenger cars, buses and trucks.
“We stop hundreds of vehicles every week — mainly on the freeways,” Grant said.
The team has special training to work on issues with drug trafficking and smuggling. They also assist other Michigan State Police posts and departments with any major crimes, such as a string of robberies.
