Truck stopped, searched

Members of the Michigan State Police Hometown Security Team combed over a semi-truck in a Grand Haven parking lot early Thursday afternoon, but nothing suspicious was found.

A K-9 unit from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department participated in the search in the Driftwood Inn/Starlite Lanes lot off Beacon Boulevard.

Sgt. Nate Grant, who heads the team for the Sixth District out of Rockford, said troopers made the traffic stop, partly because the truck was from Texas.

“Vehicles traveling to Michigan from the southwest border states sometimes raise suspicions,” he said.

The search was conducted with the driver’s consent, Grant said.

The sergeant said his five-member criminal interdiction team works an area from Holland to Ludington and Mount Pleasant to Ionia. It’s not just commercial vehicles they stop — they also check out passenger cars, buses and trucks.

“We stop hundreds of vehicles every week — mainly on the freeways,” Grant said.

The team has special training to work on issues with drug trafficking and smuggling. They also assist other Michigan State Police posts and departments with any major crimes, such as a string of robberies.

Tri-cities realist

Barney Fife would be jealous. Note to the police, semi trucks (and trailers) tend to travel between states. And flatbeds aren't the best trailers for smuggling goods or illegals, although it has been done. So now a license plate is just cause for a search, what's next? So much for the Constitution, 200+ years was a good run.

Tri-cities realist

And perhaps they mistook a semi truck for the vehicle described in the recent string of robberies.

Hmm no link and yet verification was required. It's either NSA or MSP doesn't like criticism...ha

Harassment, harassment, harassment!!! The driver or trucking company should be able to bill for lost income.

They should have broken out the chopper in case the semi made a run for it...or just circle around for three hours so the pilots get some flight hours in.

Wow...having Texas plates is now cause for a stop and search.

Stopped for DWT - Driving While Texan. It is blatant profiling and Texism.

It is no longer safe to wear cowboy hats or listen to Country.

No officer, I do not consent to any search.
Am I free to go?

That's what you say we oughta do.
If we hang 'em all we'll get the guilty,
Just remember they'll hang you, too."

Say no to new taxes

Wake up America! We're losing more of our rights everyday!

This team is a giant waste of our tax dollars. Get his five guys on the road taking 911 calls. That seems like a big area to waste the time and dollars on driving, man hours for something that partially paid for by the feds. That money is suppose to be used for homeland terrorism investigation not narcotic which hunt.
