Fruitport Township Police responded to the home in the 2300 block of East Broadway at about 10:48 a.m., when the homeowner reported an unknown man tried to enter his home.

The family dog awakened the homeowner in time to see a man attempting to enter the residence through a side door. The homeowner confronted the suspect, who then fled the area on foot.

Police searched the nearby area and located the man, who fled again when he saw police.

Officers from Fruitport and Norton Shores set up a perimeter and captured the man after he crossed U.S. 31 and ran into a wooded area.

The man, who was on parole for home invasions, was lodged in the Muskegon County Jail.

A bag containing valuables was discarded by the man when he fled from police.

Officials are trying to determine whether the items in the bag were obtained from other homes or unlocked vehicles in the area.
