Patrick Doerr was sentenced Monday in Grand Rapids 63rd District Court. The Sparta man pleaded no contest last month to misdemeanor moving violations causing death.

Authorities said Doerr's pickup was traveling about 84 mph when it slammed last September into the rear of car in Plainfield Township, killing 29-year-old William Kochis and 49-year-old John Pomeroy. Kochis and Pomeroy were stopped in morning rush hour traffic.

Doerr refused to take a blood test at a hospital. A urine screening found cocaine and opiates, but that test was not allowed in court.

Judge Sara Smolenski said Monday that more testing should have been done at the time of the crash.

This is so sad. I went to college with William Kochis' sister-in-law and the family is going thru a terrible time, as her sister has four children without a father now. Keeping the victim's families in my prayers!
