Ottawa County Sheriff’s officials said the crash happened when Michael Johnson, 39, of Grand Rapids drove his 1999 Pontiac the wrong way in the eastbound I-96 lanes and hit another car in a head-on collision.

Johnson died in the crash and emergency personnel rushed the other driver, Mitchell Hamm, 22, of Grand Haven, to the hospital after extricating him from his 2002 Buick Regal.

The collision occurred at about 4 a.m. Saturday a mile before the Coopersville exit.

Eastbound I-96 at 112th Avenue near Nunica remained closed until about 7 a.m. as officials investigated and cleared the crash scene.

Hamm was still listed in critical condition Sunday evening at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.
