Police said Patrick Gillespie, 24, of Hastings was driving east on M-45 in Allendale at about 5:26 a.m. when he fell asleep. Gillespie’s 2001 Buick Century drifted into the median, went airborne, landed and then collided with the smaller vehicle, which was stopped in the turn-around area just west of 68th Avenue.

Patrick Burrell, 49, had to be extricated from his 2006 Mini Cooper before the Allendale man was taken by ambulance to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Gillespie was not injured, police said.

The crash is still under investigation. Police said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
