Drew Bruursema suffered scrapes on his legs in the 12:15 p.m. crash. His mother said she planned to take him to the emergency room to be evaluated.

Bruursema was eastbound on Ferris at U.S. 31.

“I was coming home from football,” he said. “I was helping at a camp for the little kids.”

Bruursema said he stopped for a red light.

“The light turned green. I started going,” Bruursema said.

A black southbound car ran the red light, swerved at the last moment, but still caught the back of the mo-ped, police said.

“He was on his cell phone,” police said of the 68-year-old Grand Haven man driving the car.

Bruursema said the car hit the back of his mo-ped.

“It didn’t hit my leg,” he said. “But the thing flew out from underneath me.”

The youth, who was wearing a helmet, landed in the road. The car went off the road into the ditch.

Bruursema refused treatment at the scene.

Paramedics were initially told they weren’t needed, but were requested to return to the scene to evaluate the driver of the car.

Police said they would administer a personal Breathalyzer test on the driver as a precaution.

The man will get a ticket for running the red light., police said.

Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies and Grand Haven Township Fire/Rescue responded to the crash.

Do a Google search on mo-ped. It will change your results to moped. Why? Because everyone spells it moped, not mo-ped, including the dictionary.

A scooter is neither a mo-ped or a moped.

Good to see he was wearing some gear, most wear nothing, not even long pants. I think the affordable scooter, moped mo-ped is a great way to get around but be careful out there, people do not see us on big bikes so they are more likely to miss you!

I think this is at least the 4th "accident" at this intersection in as many weeks. Semi jack knifed and swatted a minivan, another north bounder took out the ped crossing light, more skid marks into the median heading north, and now this one.
This is probably one of the worst intersections in this area!
Ferris and US31, which is not mentioned in the article.

I would have pulled the driver out of his car and beat him to near death for being a worthless and useless human who was being selfish.

What is the driver's name?

Does he realize his negligence almost killed a kid? Why wasn't he arrested? At least take his license away for life. The driver is 68 years old so it's probably time to retire driving anyway.

Why wasn't this treated more seriously?

As a parent, if this were my kid the driver would regret his negligence.
