The crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. on M-104 at Williams Street, near St. Mary's Catholic Church.

The mo-ped ran into the back of a car that had stopped for traffic backed up ahead.

Shortly after the scooter crash, a 25-year-old bicyclist was injured when he struck a pickup truck on Christman Street, north of M-104 in Spring Lake.

More information on the crashes will be published in Wednesday's Tribune.

Still stickin' with mo-ped, huh? Plus, that's clearly a scooter.

I love the look the cop is giving Becky. Lol

And yes, it is a scooter. Moped is a motorized pedal bike. Scooter has no pedals. You don't see many mopeds around anymore. Back in Flint as a teen I used to gather up junk mopeds/scooters and restore them in my dads garage. Had a sweet 1997 Tomos Targa LX 2-speed that was bored out, had a bigger carb, and a sprocket change that would do 50mph as well as several old Vespas and Honda Spree's

My first powered "road bike" was a 1971 Solex S 3800, Deep black with hand painted gold pin stripes. The 49cc engine would get almost 200 MPG on premium gas with high grade 2 stroke oil. The drivetrain was a friction drum on the front wheel directly off the end of the crankshaft that would propel the bike to a dismal top speed of18-22 MPH but I went everywhere on that thing...slowly. She went through three floods in Tulsa and ran after splitting the case and cleaning everything out, the fourth flood found me away for AF duty and my parents got rid of it when the engine seized from not being cleaned out right away.

Can you text and throttle a moped errr scooter at the same time ?

Grassyass

I See it too Hawk. Sensible me would never consider riding and texting . . . but apparently, some believe they are capable.

Wrong! We just sold 2 MOPEDS today clearly stated as such on the "Michigan Registration" as MOPEDS and neither had ANY pedals. We also have 2 Motorcycles yet. MOPEDS are 50CC and under with or without pedals and Scooters have over 50CC's with the smaller diameter wheels pedals or not and Motorcycles have the larger diameter wheels as stated in the Michigan rules/laws. I'm not going to give you the diameters of each and if you want to know, research it! Read the mi.gov legislative enacted vehicle laws and learn. Some of you posters don't have a clue about what you type/post. I think the State of Michigan knows a whole lot more about vehicle classifications than you uneducated posters!

That's my little sister in that crash, and you all are sitting here arguing about whether it was a scooter or a moped? Y'all disgust me. Two young girls were seriously injured, and no, she wasn't texting while driving. The car in front of her stopped before she had time to react. Where the hell has common decency and basic compassion gone? Gtfo

Please see my comment at the bottom...

Riverside

Sorry your little sister and the other girl were seriously injured, hope they recover quickly.

But your comment "The car in front of her stopped before she had time to react" What does this say? She was following to close or within a assured clear distance to stop.

Clearly this accident could have been avoided if she would have been following basic driving laws......

Wolverine49457

I wondered if the second rider's weight threw off her judgment of how close is too close in order to stop. It's a common error and only riders who often have passengers get a good feel for the added stopping distance simply through riding experience; I Pray they both find healing a speedy recovery upon them and worried families!

SOS-321. Riding a Moped Safely
Keeping Your Distance
Distance in Front
* Remain a safe distance behind the vehicle in front
of you when coming to a stop.
* Keep at least a three- to four- second traveling distance between you and the vehicle in front of you to allow time to react if the driver ahead suddenly stops. It gives you time to see potholes, slippery spots and debris.

(edit). Thankfully they were wearing helmets!

If you would like to see how the legitimate press spells moped, read this article:

Haha. Can't believe this is still up after two hours. This falls under the category of "Personal Attack" in Barry's World. True statement though...

jonas6594, my boyfriend and I were at the scene when it happened we called for help and there were many others there trying to comfort and calm your sister. Our prayers are with you and your family and especially your sister and her friend!!! It was a very unfortunate accident, and I sincerely hope your sister will be alright!!

jonas6594,

Yes, I'm sorry to hear it was your little sister and the other girl that was seriously hurt. It's not a question of "compassion" but a question of who allowed a 15 year old person to even ride double! Where was the parental control anyway?

I'm also sorry to have to tell you that it wasn't a just simple accident but was caused by the driver of the moped. Michigan State law requires the driver of the vehicle to be in full control of the vehicle they are operating including keeping a safe distance between their vehicle and ANY vehicle etc ahead of them. This was NOT done and therefore, the crash!

Then, most importantly, the moped was being operated egregiously have 2 riders on it which is fully against the law and of course the driver knew it. If the driver of the moped was licensed to drive it, she would have had to pass a test first. Also in black and white is the wording that the brakes on a moped are only large enough to stop the moped with the weight of ONE rider. DUH! The moped test requires pre-information study and then questions answered as to who and how many can ride on a moped which in Michigan and it's in black and white repeatedly. The law so clearly states that only ONE person is allowed to ride on a moped 50CC and under period! NO EXCEPTIONS! A 15 year old person CANNOT operate a larger than a 50CC motorized vehicle on any Michigan roads so that couldn't even be the case without very serious penalties including loss of getting their license going forward.

Are the law abiding people of this country to have "compassion" for someone who knowingly and premeditatedly breaks the laws they'd agreed to comply with by signing and then get's hurt or worse? I think not! Life is full of decisions for all of us and sooner or later even anyone who plays "Russian Roulette" with the laws and rules in life actually loses!

Think about it!

rosepetalsinbloom

Clearly there were some mistakes made and some bad judgment used. But the fact of the matter is that these two girls were seriously injured!! I don't think anything is more clearly important than that.

LessThanAmused

I think the point people above are trying to make sweetie is that these girls wouldn't have been seriously injured if in fact they'd used their brains for something other than a way to keep their ears apart. So, their injuries were unecessary and preventable had they been raised to use common sense.

I see kids just like these two all over town, frequently going over the speed limit and weaving about in traffic and I'm amazed that there aren't more incidents like this one. I swear that sometimes it seems like they are playing chicken with the traffic, or are more stupid than a sack of hammers.

As for the Mo-ped/scooter debate, my two cents says that is a scooter as I see no pedals. A Mo-Ped stands for MOtorized PEDal bike. There would be no point to calling that scooter a Mo-Ped as it doesn't have pedals. Just because a government agency calls it by the wrong name does not make them the last word on the topic. I can think of many other incidents of governmental agencies being in the wrong so this is not an isolated case.

jonas6594

My comment was misinterpreted. I'm not saying she's not at fault, I was generalizing that she didn't have the time to react. I was more heated about the fact that people were arguing about the difference of a scooter and a moped when two young girls were hurt.

Luciddreamer

Alright guys..that was my best friend that you guys are arguing about. I've ridden before on her moped and she's a very careful driver she's not stupid and I'm with her now and those comments about her about not using her brain and stuff..it sucks for her. I'm disgusted that the majority of you are discussing whether or not it's a freakinhg moped or a scooter. She's a wonderful person and lively girl with a huge sense of humor and FYI you are allowed two people on a moped, you just can't go on highways and you have to wear a helmet. So basically I only got on here and created an account because I'm so disgusted that grown adults are acting so low. I appreciate the people who were compassionate to her but the rest I'm shaking my head. I'm 16 years old and I'm more mature than you. She's ok and well just in case you all were wondering instead of if it was a moped or a damn scooter. No more mean comments please. Thank you:)

Barry Soetoro

Grown adults? Where?

Lanivan

You sound like a nice guy. Don't let these comments bother you or your friend, who is probably quite traumatized. Like with everything bad that happens, learn from the experience and move forward, stronger than before, and forget about the stupid debate about mopeds, mo-peds, and scooters.

EDIT: Ok, perhaps I did misspeak. Make that... "silly, non-consequential debate about mopeds, mo-peds, and scooters that enforces a pattern of lighthearted comments that are rebuked by those involved in the accident, or friends/family of those involved, who are offended by the apparent insouciance".

Barry Soetoro

Ahhhh, the ever sensible Lani to the rescue. That's right - the Trib comment section is no place for stupid debate.

LessThanAmused

Oh yes it is you right-wing wacko! :-S

Barry Soetoro

No, it isn't. Lani said so.

Lanivan

Have I ever told you how brilliant you are?

LessThanAmused

Great, now I feel like Tommy Smothers. :-(

Lanivan

No! Why, just the other day didn't I say you were sharp as a tack, or some such colloquialism? If not, I meant to!

rosepetalsinbloom

I'm so happy she's doing well!! :-)
