The boy and his mother were visiting the area from the Lansing area. He was last seen playing in the water’s edge, which was turbulent with high waves driven by strong southwest winds at the time.

A Coast Guard helicopter was launched from Milwaukee to help in the search.

The boy was located safe a half-hour later about a half-mile north of the park. A resident spotted the child in a life jacket walking along the sand, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department. He was not in the water.

The Holland Sentinel contributed to this report.
