Eighteen-year-old Japaris Lamar Rogers died from multiple stab wounds received about 11 p.m., said Capt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department.

Rogers was walking with a group of friends in the 100 block of Riley Street, when he was approached and stabbed multiple times by the 16-year-old suspect, police said.

He was treated at the scene, but pronounced dead upon arrival at Holland Hospital.

The suspect, Victor Donaldson, was found at a residence and arrested without incident.

He is lodged in the Ottawa County Juvenile Detention Center pending arraignment on a charge of open murder, Bennett said.

The incident remains under investigation.

It looks like we need Jail Awareness programs in our schools. With 80 or more reserve deputies I'm sure a few could be found to put a program together. The laws would have to be changed to let selected kids into a prison setting within proximity of inmates. Right now the law won't allow it. We obviously have a big, huge, major problem. 1986 we had 3 prosecutors in Ottawa County Prosecutors office. Now we have 15 or more? These kids need to see what will happen to them in jail/prison. The physical/sexual/psychological abuse by all the predators our state locked up for the last 10 years turns it into a field fest that has no rehabilitative affect whatsoever.

This could be happening in the tri-cities if we aren't careful; too sad for words. I have grandchildren this age that feel safe in GH walking around and enjoying a summer evening, I would hate for that to change.
