Samantha Mackeller was westbound on Warner Street, came around the curve where Warner changes into Bass Drive at 92nd Avenue, went off the road, corrected and slid across the centerline into the path of the eastbound Jeep, driven by 19-year-old Britleigh Strunk of Allendale, said Sgt. Chris Koster of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department.

Allendale Township firefighters initially believed they had a pinned-in victim, but that turned out not to be the case, said Lt. William O'Donnell.

Strunk was sitting in the grass just east of the crash when firefighters arrived. She was taken by ambulance to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids and was in serious condition, police said.

Mackeller had an obvious head injury, O'Donnell said. She was conscious, but not very alert at the scene. She was transported by ambulance about a quarter mile to the east where a landing zone had been set up for the Aeromed helicopter. She was flown to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids in critical condition.

Hospital officials said Mackeller remained in critical condition Monday morning. An update on Strunk was not available.

Both women were wearing seatbelts.

Police did not say whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
