Coopersville schools on lockdown

(UPDATED 6:51 p.m.) The Coopersville Area Public Schools campus was locked down near the end of the school day Thursday following a telephoned threat indicating potential harm to students and staff, police said.

Parents of students were asked not to pick up their kids during the lockdown. Parents were first notified via a post on the school district’s Facebook page at 3:20 p.m.

“We are experiencing a lockdown and all buildings are locked and students will be locked in their classroom until the Sheriff's Department authorizes dismissal,” the message read. “… We ask that you do not come to campus and pick up your child.”

The threat was called into Ottawa County Central Dispatch shortly before 3 p.m.

Capt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department said deputies were immediately dispatched to the Coopersville campus and the on-site school resource deputy assisted with the lockdown. Roads that led to the campus were blocked by police during a search of the school buildings.

“As the school was being placed in lockdown, responding deputies checked the area for suspicious activity,” Bennett said. “Deputies also swept the interior of the buildings for any threats. After all was found safe, sheriff’s deputies assisted the school in the release of the lockdown.”

School officials notified parents at about 3:45 p.m. with another message on the district's Facebook page saying that “all students and staff are safe.” At 4 p.m., the district posted a message that the lockdown is over and everyone would soon be dismissed for the day, but the buses would be running late. However, it wasn’t until 4:11 p.m. that the police allowed pedestrian traffic onto the campus, but still not vehicles.

Bennett said the phone threat was received at Ottawa County Central Dispatch, and dispatchers attempted to keep the caller on the line as deputies rushed to the school campus.

“After some dialogue, the caller hung up,” Bennett said. “Investigators are continuing to work with Central Dispatch on determining the origin of the call. The threat was taken very serious, as evident by the response of emergency personnel to the scene.”

Truth Be Told

So why are parents treated like suspects and not allowed to take their children to a safe place?

Back to the Wall

This is NOT about child safety.
Pause and let that sink in.
Read it again.

This IS about limiting the school's risk and liability.

deuce liti

They could at least say they are locking the school down for the safety of the kids while police search the area for a person of interest. If I received the vague news these parents did I would have to assume a shooting was taking place and i would go collect my child.

Vladtheimp

Amen! What would happen when you tried to extricate your child from the clutches of the government school would most likely not be pretty.

deuce liti

They would probably say that I am impeding justice at work, ignore the fact that the lack of justice is the reason they have to be there and then break the very laws they were upholding to "remove me from the situation" and proceed to put me in a burlap sack and reprogram me using torture and reruns of 'Happy Days'.

Vladtheimp

I think you're on target. Instead of the Fonz, this would be better http://youtu.be/Gt2Rmx-h84I; I'll refrain from comparing the sentiments to the seas diminishing.

Just watch how fast they catch this suspect. With all the computers, profilers and the assistance of the Secret Service. The suspect is already identified. Serial numbers of phone, facial recognition software tied into DMV records along with all the cameras at check out stations - and LEIN machine. BUSTED!!!! The forms are already pre-printed and all the prosecutor has to do is cut-copy-paste. The MDOC already has a cell waiting. Its over - the cops are just toying with the suspect like a cat toys with a mouse before it eats it. They will bust his doors down and haul the person away in cuffs screaming and crying.

Three lockdowns in the first week of school. Somebody went to Lockdown Summer School.

ISIS has crossed the Canadian border and infiltrated our schools.

Tri-cities realist

That wouldn't be funny.

Lanivan

Of course it isn't. But that's the sick stuff Gov Rick Perry and other Texas politicians are spreading - that ISIS is infiltrating the Mexican-US border in Texas and will begin attacking a la 9/11 any day now.

It's sick, sleazy fear-mongering to rile their base. There is no proof to back up their claim, it's highly improbable to ever happen, and it demonstrates a disregard for rational thought. Works like a charm every time.

Back to the Wall

There she goes again - manufacturing opportunities to insert the shrill shriek of partisan politics.

You're cute.

Lanivan

I realize it is so absurd as to seem manufactured, but it's absolutely true.

"Eager to cast himself as the Republican candidate who is best-equipped to protect and defend the homeland against another terrorist attack, Perry recently floated the terrifying idea that Islamic terrorists affiliated with ISIS could have already entered the United States through the U.S.-Mexico border.

"There's the obvious great concern that because of the condition of the border, from the standpoint of it not being secure and us not knowing who is penetrating across, that individuals from ISIS or other terrorist states could be," Perry told a gathering at the Heritage Foundation, the conservative think tank based in Washington. "I think it's a very real possibility that they may have already used that."

It could be a "real possibility" but -- as Perry acknowledged -- no evidence backs it up." http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/02/op...

It's simply another cheap, sleazy, self-serving attempt to rally the troops. Shrill partisan politics at it's worst. Just like all the other crap that comes out of Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, and other conservative extremists.

Tri-cities realist

"it's highly improbable to ever happen, and it demonstrates a disregard for rational thought."

To think that terrorists would actually infiltrate our country and conduct an attack, is not only highly PROBABLE, it actually has happened. Or have you forgotten what happened that September morning nearly 13 years ago? Your inability to connect the dots is what is irrational.

happycamper

Look,s like they established a standard procedure for any kind of threat to the student,s, not bad idea, but sure make,s parent,s worry.

Straightjacket

Yea schools are working properly kids really respect an education in America. Some idiot unloaded on me because I suggested change, standards, accountability. Nah seems like its all working good the future is bright. Public education has become a dumping ground, I want my taxes back or I want it fixed. Private school should be for idiots that can't tow the line.

LV not funny.

Immediate lock down, there could have been a threat and taking no chance,s, what if you demanded you pickup your child and the kid,s are gunned down coming out of the school, that would not be a pretty picture, so don't make any assumption,s school is being un-fair, it,s all new process and they are still learning too, so be patient.
