Fire in welding machine extinguished at Shape Corp.

Employees were evacuated and fire in a welding unit was extinguished when firefighters were called to Shape Corp., 1820 Hayes St., Monday night, said Lt. Joe Boyle of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. City and Grand Haven Township firefighters responded to the industrial building at 9:52 p.m. on a call of fire in filters in the welding area, Boyle said. Employees were evacuated upon arrival of the firefighters, and there was some smoke coming from the upper portion of a machine in the automated welding area, he said.

The machine contained numerous rolls of air filters, which were believed to be on fire, Boyle said. The filters were removed and taken away from the machine to be extinguished, he said.

There was no damage estimate available this morning.

Firefighters, who were on the scene for about an hour Monday night, used exhaust fans to remove smoke from the building, Boyle said.
