Jenison teen critical after Chicago Drive crash

The son of Calvin College men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek was critically injured early Tuesday afternoon in a crash at a Georgetown Township intersection. Daniel Vande Streek, 17, of Jenison was pinned inside his van for a half-hour following the 1:15 p.m. accident, according to Sgt. John Wolffis of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. Vande Streek was taken by ambulance to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, where he was listed in critical condition this morning, a hospital spokesperson said.

Vande Streek was driving a 2006 Ford Windstar van south on 18th Avenue and crossed Chicago Drive with a green light when he was struck broadside by a Ford F-250 pickup truck pulling a trailer, Wolffis said.

The pickup — driven by Daniel Rickert, 38, of Grant — was westbound on Chicago Drive. Wolffis said Rickert became distracted while looking for papers in his vehicle and ran the red light.

The pickup rolled over after the impact and separated from the trailer. Two small tractors came off the trailer.

Rickert and a passenger in the Vande Streek van, Trevor Nykamp, 16, of Zeeland Township, suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene, police said.

Wolffis said the intersection was partially closed for two hours after the incident, which is still under investigation.

Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, he said.
