Authorities: Man flees Mich. court, caught in Ind.

A man who fled from a southern Michigan courthouse after being sentenced to six months in jail was captured about 15 miles away in northeastern Indiana. The Branch County Sheriff's Department said Dennis F. LaForest fled from court security officers after the sentencing Thursday on a charge of receiving and concealing stolen property of $1,000 or more. The department said he drove away in his vehicle, leaving his wife at Branch County District Court.

The Sheriff’s Department said LaForest’s wife helped them contact him and tried to talk him into surrendering.

Authorities said LaForest was found near Fremont, Ind., just across the state line. He was captured by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department and was being held pending extradition.
