Petition filed against parents of 13-year-old girl

A petition has been filed to take away the parental rights of a Michigan mother and father whose 13-year-old daughter delivered a stillborn child and hid the infant's body in a friend's attic. Huron County Prosecutor Timothy Rutkowski, who filed the petition this week, also wants a court to take away the parents' rights to three other teenagers living in a Huron Township home, according to the Huron Daily Tribune in Bad Axe.

The other teens are ages 15, 16 and 17. The 16-year-old boy was charged last month with third-degree criminal sexual conduct in connection with the girl’s pregnancy. A judge ordered him removed from the home. Their names have not been released, but Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson has said the 13-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy lived in the same house and shared the same last name.

A date for a judge to hear the petition has not been set.

Rutkowski’s petition was filed on behalf of the state Department of Human Services and claims the parents didn’t provide proper care for the children and that the home was unsanitary and had no electricity or running water.

A Children’s Protective Services worker “observed dog feces in every room of the home to the point that a person could not walk through the home without stepping in dog feces,” according to the petition.

Cats also were “crawling in and out of holes in the walls,” it stated.

Authorities removed 11 malnourished dogs from the home last week.

The mother and another adult live in the home. The two adults and the three remaining teens received shelter last week from members of a local church.

The teen’s father lives in Roseville, just north of Detroit, the Daily Tribune reported.

Police found the infant’s body in the attic of a home in nearby Port Hope after the 13-year-old mother sought medical treatment. The 16-year-old boy was arrested after police talked to the girl and questioned him. Authorities believe he fathered the baby.
