3 rescued from capsized boat in chilly Lake Michigan

A U.S. Coast Guard crew from Station St. Joseph rescued three people whose boat capsized in the 59-degree water of Lake Michigan on Tuesday. Rescued were Seth Kulpinski, 36, and Chad Witt, 28, both of Three Rivers; and Jake Rolan, 24, of Marcellus. Kulpinski, Rolan and Witt reportedly used a VHF-FM radio to call for help - but after the men's initial mayday calls went unanswered, they used a cell phone to call 911. They were only able to pass the first line of their GPS position when dispatchers lost contact with them on the cell phone.

They estimated that it capsized about 20 minutes before the Coast Guard arrived. Only one of the three men was wearing a life jacket.
