Man, young child die following Grand Rapids fire

A man and a young child died late Thursday following a Grand Rapids house fire that authorities believe started in the basement. Police said the man died at the scene of the fire and the child died after being taken to an area hospital for treatment. A neighbor who noticed the fire called 911. Fire officials said the man was found in a living room in the front of the house and the child was in a second-floor bedroom. Authorities said it didn't appear there were working smoke detectors in the home.
