Burglary suspect causes crash while fleeing police near Holland

A 17-year-old Holland Township resident is in custody after being witnessed breaking into homes on Sarah Mae Drive in Holland Township on Thursday afternoon, police said. Ottawa County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call of a suspicious suspect believed to be breaking and entering homes at 12:45 p.m., Lt. Steve Kempker said. The suspect was believed to be in possession of a handgun, Kempker said. When police arrived, the suspect fled on foot, Kempker said. After deputies surrounded the area, the suspect was seen driving away in a van.

The suspect fled in the van and caused a two-vehicle crash at the corner of James Street and U.S. 31.

Kempker said June Reimink, an 81-year-old Holland resident who was driving east on James Street, was hurt in the crash. She is currently in serious but stable condition, according to a Holland Hospital official.

The suspect, whose name is being held pending arraignment, is in custody at the Ottawa County Jail, Kempker said.

The incident is still under investigation, he said.
