Baby dropped off at Grand Rapids fire station

Authorities said a baby has been placed in the care of the state after being dropped off at a Grand Rapids fire station. The child dropped off Wednesday night appears to be older than 72 hours but less than a year old, according to The Associated Press. Under Michigan law, a parent may surrender a newborn up to 72 hours of age to authorities without risk of prosecution. Grand Rapids Fire Department Battalion Chief Peg Felix said someone brought the child into the station and then left. She did not know who dropped off the baby.
