Suspect arrested after car, foot chase

A 43-year-old Grand Rapids man was arrested after police said he shoplifted from the Spring Lake Wesco gas station, then led police on a vehicle and foot chase through Grand Haven early Wednesday afternoon. Police were alerted when the man allegedly stole a bottle of liquor from the Wesco gas station on Savidge Street in Spring Lake around 12:30 p.m. The suspect vehicle headed into Grand Haven and was spotted by a Grand Haven Department of Public Safety officer as it drove south on Beacon Boulevard, said GHDPS Lt. Joe Boyle.

Two squad cars started following the car, which was observed “making attempts to dart through traffic,” Boyle said. Police activated their lights and siren as the suspect vehicle increased its speed.

The suspect crossed Robbins Road, then turned left and headed east on Robbins, gaining a speed of up to 70 mph, Boyle said. The man ran a red light at Beechtree and Robbins at around 60 mph. He tried to turn into Robbins Nest Apartments, but hit a tree, activating the car’s air bags and disabling the car.

Boyle said the man fled on foot, and was tased after a warning, but continued running. Police caught the man behind the Robbins Nest Apartment buildings and took him into custody without incident.

He was lodged in the Ottawa County Jail. His name is not being released pending arraignment.
