Police: Suspicious person incident a misunderstanding

The case of a suspicious person approaching two young children on Friday afternoon appears to be a misunderstanding, said Sgt. Brent Converse of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. Two children walking in the area of Bower Street and Breeze Drive reported being approached by a man who asked them about their day and if they had any homework, then drove off, Converse said. The children reported the incident to their parents, who then called police.

When the information was being broadcast through media outlets, the man in question realized they were talking about him and contacted police to request an interview, Converse said.

“It was determined there were no ill intentions. It was simply a person who was being friendly as he passed by,” Converse said. “He never considered that this might be taken by the kids as a ‘stranger danger’ contact.”
