Allendale Twp. woman tries to sell child on eBay

Police said an Allendale Township woman tried to sell a 2-year-old girl on eBay. Ottawa County Sheriff's Department detectives said dispatchers received phone calls from as far away as California and New York, notifying them about the posting on the online auction site at around noon Monday. One of the callers actually placed a bid on the child, thinking it was a hoax, said Lt. Mark Bennett. The suspect accepted the bid and contacted the bidder. The caller then contacted police.

Bennett said the 20-year-old suspect is related to the girl (her cousin) and the mother entrusted the child to her while she was away. Investigators are withholding the suspect’s name until charges are filed.

After the posting was discovered, deputies contacted the child’s 23-year-old mother, who was in Grand Rapids. After meeting with the girl’s mother, a worker with Child Protective Services turned the child over to her.

Investigators said they believe the suspect wasn’t actually going to sell the child, but was probably trying to obtain the money under false pretenses.

Although the Grand Rapids Press reported today the suspect said she did the whole thing as a joke, Bennett said “that’s not what the investigation shows at this point.”

Police said the toddler, who is from Wyoming, was not hurt.

The incident is still under investigation, then will be turned over to the Ottawa County Prosecuting Attorney’s office for review.

The suspect is not in custody.
