Boy, 2, dies day after being pulled from lake

A Grand Rapids hospital spokesperson said a 2-year-old boy has died more than a day after he was pulled from an Allegan County lake. Trenton Carney was at his family's Watson Township home along Miller Lake on Monday morning when he slipped out of the house without his parents' knowledge. After they discovered the boy was gone, the parents searched for him, then found him in the lake.

The parents, Michael Carney and Amber Halford, did not have a phone, so they put the boy in their car and began driving to the hospital. They nearly got into an accident at 124th Avenue and 12th Street, and that is where they flagged down the other driver for help calling 911.

A woman at a nearby dairy farm knew CPR. She rushed over to help the boy until emergency crews arrived.

Trenton was first taken to a Plainwell hospital, then transferred to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, where he died Tuesday.

Allegan County deputies are still investigating the incident.
