Man critically injured in Robinson Township farming accident

A 67-year-old Robinson Township man was critically injured Friday afternoon when a water tank collapsed on top of him. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department was called to 11319 Johnson St. at about 4 p.m. on report of a farming accident in a blueberry field, said OCSD Sgt. John Wolffis. On arrival, deputies located Gregorio Rojas, who was unresponsive, in a blueberry field near a large plastic water tank, Wolffis said.

“The victim had been working under a wooden platform that had a 400-gallon water tank on top of it,” Wolffis said. “The platform collapsed while the victim was under it.”

Rojas was trapped underneath the wood and tank until the owner of the property removed the debris, Wolffis said.

Sheriff’s deputies and Robinson Township firefighters treated the patient at the scene. He was transported to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids by North Ottawa Community Hospital ambulance. He was listed in critical condition at the Grand Rapids hospital late Friday, Wolffis said.

Wolffis said it is unknown what caused the wooden platform to collapse, and the case remains under investigation.
