Investigation continues in fatal mobile home fire

The investigation is continuing into a fatal mobile home fire which killed 14-month-old Trenton Harlen early Tuesday morning, said Lt. Steve Kempker of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. Investigators from the Sheriff's Department and the State Fire Marshall's Office were on the scene Tuesday, looking into the cause of the fire, Kempker said. In the meantime, the Ottawa County medical examiner reported that the toddler died as a result of smoke inhalation, Kempker said.

The boy’s mother, Amanda Harlen, 28, was listed in good condition this morning at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, a hospital spokesperson said. Harlen’s 6-year-old daughter, Jasmine Vander Hulst, remained in serious condition, the spokesperson said.

Emergency officials found Harlen and Vander Hulst outside the burning mobile home just before 2 a.m. Tuesday. They were unable to get to the little boy until after Holland Township firefighters could douse the flames.
