Firefighters called to car fire, spill, playground fall

Spring Lake Township firefighters responded to a car fire at about 4 p.m. Friday at Joe's Auto Parts, 14670 Cleveland St. Fire Chief Rick Nuvill said employees at the used car parts business were cutting a car apart when it caught on fire. "They used their extinguishers and they thought they had it out,' Nuvill said. "They went to get more extinguishers and, when they came back, it was fully involved. It was an old junk car with no physical value.'

Nuvill said his crew extinguished the fire in minutes.

Later Friday, the department responded to a chemical spill at 15792 Connelly St., where a lawn service had accidentally spilled grub killer at about 8 p.m.

“We were able to look at the material data safety sheet and there was no danger,” Nuvill said. “We put oil dry on it and it absorbed. There were no dangers, but the grubs are in trouble.”

Grand Haven Township Fire Department personnel responded to a personal injury call about 12:40 p.m. Friday at Rosy Mound Elementary School.

Township Fire Chief Tom Gerencer said a 10-year-old fell while playing football on the playground.
