Father dies after rescuing son, 3, from Osceola County lake

A 23-year-old Grand Rapids man died Monday after rescuing his 3-year-old son who fell overboard from a boat on Sunday. WWTV-WWUP reported that Matthew VanderMolen's son fell overboard while he and a friend were boating on Rose Lake in Osceola County, near Le Roy. Officials said VanderMolen jumped in and rescued the boy, but the father sank under the water and didn't resurface.

WOOD-TV reported that VanderMolen’s body was found Monday. People in private boats searched for him on Sunday before authorities arrived, and divers and the Osceola County Sheriff’s Department marine unit weren’t able to find him Sunday.

Authorities said life preservers weren’t worn by the boaters.
