Boy, 2, nearly drowns in Norton Shores pool

A Muskegon County toddler is in the hospital after nearly drowning in the family's pool in Norton Shores on Tuesday. A neighbor heard the mother screaming from across the fence, shortly before 1 p.m., and went over to help. "We peeked over the fence and my mom said, ‘Oh my God, there's a child in the pool,'' Stephanie Luckette said. "So I told her to call 911.' Luckette said she then ran over to see what she could do.

“The child’s mother was in the pool with the child, trying to get out, but the winterized cover was on,” Luckette said. “And those covers ... get slimy and nasty before you take them off, and she was trying to get out.”

The mother eventually reached the edge and Luckette, a nursing student at Muskegon Community College and a nurse’s aide at a local hospital, went into action.

“I grabbed the child from her arms, put the child on the concrete and started CPR,” she said.

When paramedics arrived, they took over and rushed the boy to the hospital. They were able to get a pulse and he was breathing.

The 2-year-old boy has since been transferred to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.
