Hit-and-run driver sought in rollover accident

Two members of a Holland family were injured late Sunday when their vehicle was hit by a sport utility vehicle on Interstate 196 near Zeeland. After the collision, the family's van rolled over several times at the 56-mile marker, according to Sgt. Brian Buter of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. Mark Raines, 41, and his wife Abigail, 39, were taken to Holland Hospital after the 11:51 p.m. incident. Mark was treated and released, and Abigail remains hospitalized in fair condition.

The couple’s children, ages 5 and 2, were not injured, police said.

The SUV caught the Raineses’ 2002 Dodge Caravan on its back bumper, Buter said. Raines then lost control of the van and it rolled several times, landing on its side.

Witnesses said the SUV had narrowly missed several other vehicles before connecting with the van, Buter said.

The SUV, which was black, stopped about a half-mile down the road for several minutes, before leaving the scene, witnesses said.

Police are asking anyone who sees a black SUV with damage to its front passenger area, with possible white paint on it that rubbed off from the van, to call police at 616-738-4687 or Silent Observer at 1-877-88-SILENT.
