One of Michigan's top Republicans in the 1990s will go to trial on sex charges involving children. The Lansing State Journal reported Phil Arthurhultz this week waived his right to a hearing to determine if there is probable cause for trial. The former Republican state senator faces many charges in Lansing, including conspiracy to entice girls into sex acts and accosting teen boys for immoral purposes.

The 63-year-old Arthurhultz represented the Muskegon area from 1979 to 1994, rising to Senate majority leader. He became chairman of the Michigan Liquor Control Commission, but resigned in 1998 after questions were raised about how he spent public money.

A message seeking comment was left with his attorney.
