Man arrested after fleeing accident scene

A 24-year-old Holland man is in custody after fleeing the scene of an accident early this morning, police said. An Ottawa County Sheriff's patrol car came upon a car that had crashed into a utility pole on Butternut Drive north of James Street shortly after 3 a.m., Ottawa County Sheriff's Sgt. Keith Garvelink said. As the deputy approached the scene, he saw two people run away from the car. The driver was found later near 136th Avenue and James Street with the help of a K-9 unit. He was taken into custody. His passenger, who also fled, was not found, Garvelink said.

The man, whose name has not been released pending arraignment, received minor injuries in the crash but refused treatment, Garvelink said. He is currently lodged in the Ottawa County Jail for alcohol offenses, fleeing the scene of the crash and driving with a suspended license, Garvelink said.

The crash broke the utility pole and brought power lines down into Butternut Drive, Garvelink said. As a result, the road was closed during accident cleanup.
