Storm causes outage in village neighborhood

Possibly a dozen homes were without power in a Spring Lake Village neighborhood off Lake Avenue after a storm went through just after 8 this morning, said Lt. Steve Bruneau of the Spring Lake Township Fire Department. Firefighters were called at 8:16 a.m. to a home at 320 Mark St. on a possible lightning strike and the smell of electrical burning in the house. Bruneau said the residents did not hear any loud crack from lightning and there was no damage to the house itself.

The electrical line supplying the house with power was on fire and the smell inside the house was from the insulation burning on the wire, he said.

Although the outage and burning wire were definitely weather-related, Bruneau said he did not believe the home was hit by lightning.

Tree limbs in the area of the power lines were also burning, but the fires went out on their own, Bruneau said.

Firefighters checked the neighborhood and determined that several homes on Mark, James and Visser streets and Fleser Court were without power this morning.
