One hurt in crash on U.S. 31 in Ferrysburg

One person was injured in a two-vehicle accident early this afternoon on U.S. 31, south of Ridge Street. James Hicks, 52, of Muskegon Heights was taken to North Ottawa Community Hospital following the 12:30 p.m. accident on the northbound lanes of U.S. 31. Police said his injuries were not serious. Hicks was driving a 1997 BMW north on the highway when he either hit the wall and then a northbound pickup truck, or hit the truck and then the wall almost head-on.

Police are trying to determine how the accident actually happened, as Hicks does not recall it and the other driver’s account conflicts with a witness account, Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Officer Michael Williams said.

The other vehicle, a 2006 Chevy pickup truck, was driven by a 47-year-old Ludington man. Williams said they would not release his name at this time.

Traffic was backed up while the accident was being policed, although one lane was kept open.

Police are seeking more information and are asking any witnesses to the accident to call the Spring Lake-Ferrysburg Police Department at 842-1889 (after hours, you can leave a message at ext. 1410).
