Coast Guard rescues man from North Fox Island

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued a 60-year-old Indianapolis man from North Fox Island in northern Lake Michigan after he was stranded there since Monday. The man, whose name wasn't released, was hoisted aboard the helicopter Thursday night and taken to Traverse City, where he was to be evaluated for possible dehydration.

The Coast Guard said the man apparently kayaked to the island from Leelanau State Park in Northport on Monday and stayed because of 3- to 4-foot waves. He ran out of food and was sunburned. The Coast Guard said his mobile phone battery was dead.

The search began after the man’s son notified the Coast Guard on Thursday afternoon that his father hadn’t returned from camping as expected.

The helicopter crew was from Air Station Traverse City.
