Former Michigan woman found dismembered in Texas

Police are investigating the murder of a West Michigan native, whose body was found in parts in Texas. Authorities said they found the dismembered body of Laura Ackerson, 27, near Richmond, Texas - hundreds of miles from her current home in Kinston, N.C. Ackerson's family still lives in Ionia County, where she grew up.

All that was found of Ackerson was her head, torso and a leg dumped in a creek. Police believe her ex-boyfriend Grant Hayes and his wife, Amanda, dismembered Ackerson, rented a U-Haul truck and dumped the body parts behind the home of Amanda’s family in Texas.

Grant, 31, and Amanda, 39, are in jail without bond and charged with murder.

Grant Hayes had full custody of her two children, ages 2 and 3.

Ackerson’s business partner filed a missing persons report on July 18, after she was supposed to pick up her kids from Hayes. Hayes told authorities she never showed up.

Ackerson’s car was found abandoned in an apartment complex. Soon after, her body was discovered in Texas.

Ackerson’s family believes a bitter custody battle is to blame.

“He may have hid it for years, but he was evil,” said Ackerson’s brother-in-law, Mike Anderson. “His friends say he was a nice guy — but to do what he did, he has to be evil.”

The family is planning a memorial service for Ackerson in Ionia County, while her accused killers will be back in court in August.
